Development / Technology of rail freight transport Periodic Timetable Research Groups

Most of the railway network was created thanks to freight transport. However, it now faces both competition from road transport and insufficient track capacity on many backbone lines intensively used by passenger transport. In the Czech Republic, the market on the part of carriers is fully liberalized and the transfer of transport back to the railways is a strategic goal of the EU and the state, even though current construction projects do not take this very much into account.

How to obtain attractive and flexible routes for freight trains without restricting periodic timetabled passenger transport - long-distance and suburban - and filling freight trains into "holes" in tact? Yes, it's feasible in a better way!

The group Development of rail freight transport (17X1RN, 17X2RN) is intended for students in the field DOS/DS - Transportation Systems and Technology in bachelor's and master's studies.

The group Technology of rail freight transport (17X1TN, 17X2TN) is intended for students in the field LOG/LA - Logistics and Transport Processes Control in bachelor's and master's studies.

What are we doing?

The group is based on the involvement of the railway in the logistics chain, but emphasizes the incorporation of relevant requirements into the operational concept of rail transport. It therefore takes into account not only the customer's requirements, but also the effective use of railway vehicles, staff and the capacity of the railway - in conjunction with the periodic timetable in passenger transport.

In addition to rail freight transport in the Czech Republic, students will also get acquainted with innovative solutions proven abroad and implement them in their thesis in a creative way in domestic conditions.

Research group meetings

Our group meets regularly once every 2 weeks together with sister groups. With delicious sandwiches, we discuss current problems of public transport or consult bachelor's and master's theses. Join the meeting without obligation, see current dates.

Last defended Theses

Below we present an illustrative selection of theses from our students which cover the portfolio of problems solved within the research group.

Comparison of engine driver training in the Czech Republic and abroad

Kothera, Filip; Diploma theses; 2022

The diploma thesis deals with the comparison of driver training in the Czech Republic and abroad. In the theoretical part, the European and state legislation dealing with the training of train drivers and its translation into practice in selected carriers is analysed. In the practical part, a comparison of this training is made and a general proposal for a change in the legislation of the Czech Republic is presented.

Catalogue Freight Train Paths on the 4th Transit Railway Corridor

Chýle, Martin Bc.; Diploma theses; 2021

This thesis is focused on verification of possibility of operation of freight trains on the mainline of 4th Transit Railway Corridor between the Czech Republic and Austria. The introduction summarizes state of the infrastructure and restrictive conditions in the form of passenger transport. During the timetabling of freight train paths, there is a special emphasis on qualitative parametres of these train paths, especially maximum train length and maximum brutto mass of the train. The conclusion summarizes conditions for operation of freight trains on the researched mainline, as well as recommendations for freight timetabling.

Catalogue Train Paths in Mixed Traffic

Růžička, Jan Bc.; Diploma theses; 2021

This diploma thesis deals with freight railway transport in the Czech Republic. Specifically, the thesis is concerned with the layout of catalogue train paths in mixed operation on the railway line between Přerov/Dluhonice and Petrovice u Karviné. The line has been analysed in detail, parameters of typical cargo trains have been set and the operating schedule concept, including construction of catalogue train paths, has been designed. Finally, the whole layout has been assessed.

Proposal of engine driver training support using simulators

Kothera, Filip; Bachelor theses; 2020

This bachelor's thesis deals with the concept of training of engine drivers on simulators. The thesis starts with an overview and discussion of current legislative requirements on training in the Czech Republic. The second part analyses the training of train drivers in selected railway undertakings in the Czech Republic. In the last part, the opportunities of introduction of simulators in training are investigated and an implementation proposal in the conditions of the Czech Republic is presented.

Elimination of Speed Drops on Roudnice nad Labem - Straškov Railway Line

Hopp, Jan Bc.; Diploma theses; 2020

The first part of the thesis evaluates the current state of the line No. 096 Roudnice nad Labem - Straškov with regard to the safety equipment used, the vehicle fleet and the connection to long-distance transport in the station Roudnice nad Labem. The next part of the thesis is devoted to the required times to be achieved and the subsequent possible technical solutions to achieve these times.

Dual-source locomotives for freight trains

Chýle, Martin; Bachelor theses; 2019

This thesis focuses on development of dual-mode locomotives and comparison with conventional locomotives, especially diesel-electric. On the examples from real operation, the calculation of operating costs for both types of locomotives was made. In the next part of the thesis, the advantages and disadvantages of using dual-mode locomotives are mentioned. The last part is evaluation of benefits of dual-mode locomotives and suggestion of optimal deployment.

New Built of Třebíč - Moravské Budějovice Railway Line

Vacek, Jan; Diploma theses; 2019

First, the thesis evaluates the transport relations in the region of Trebic, with extension to the neighbouring regions. The evaluation relies on various data sources. Then, the thesis presents a set of studies of the designed railway line originated in different historical ages. Assuming various input preconditions, the thesis constructs the timetable with the goal of finding the best operating concept for the selected variants and defines conditions of their realisation.

Design of Additional Locomotive Service in the Vysočina Area

Růžička, Jan; Bachelor theses; 2018

This bachelor thesis deals with freight railway transport in the Czech Republic. Specifically the thesis is concerned with the layout of the aditional locomotive service on the railway line Brno - Havlíčkův Brod - Kolín. The line has been analysed in detail, then the estimation of the demand for additional locomotive service has been done, operational concept has been designed, and at the same time the layout of the graphical timetable has been created. In the end this layout has been assessed.

Conception of Agglomeration Railway in Odra Region

Fridrišek, Petr; Bachelor theses; 2017

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the current situation, to design targeted infrastructure modifications and a model timetable on the modified infrastructure. The analytical part includes analysis of the current timetable and state of the infrastructure on the lines in the defined area. In addition, infrastructure modifications are proposed to match the relevant strategic documents in the area. Consequently, an operational concept is designed. It takes into account transport demand in the area, limited possibilities of infrastructure improvement and current sum of train kilometres within the area.
